Orthoptics / Children’s consultation

OUR SERVICES

Dear colleagues, dear parents,

Due to a high volume of patients and in order to better assign patients to the correct consultation hours, we are restructuring the appointment system for pediatric consultations.

From August 1, 2024, appointments for children with statutory health insurance for our vision training and children’s consultation hours will only be made upon presentation of a written report from the pediatrician regarding the (abnormal) U examination with the suspected diagnosis and the findings, as well as a referral form. Based on the findings, our doctors will then decide whether the examination constitutes a preventive check-up or whether there is already a clear pathological finding.

The preventive check-up will be billed according to the fee schedule for doctors, as there is no preventive eye examination covered by statutory health insurance in ophthalmology (even for children).
Parents must pay for preventive examinations for children themselves. These cost €50 for basic care and an additional €30 if pupil dilation is necessary.

We offer children’s consultations at our locations at Breitenbachplatz 21 and Nürnberger Str. 67 and primarily serve Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, and Berlin-Schöneberg. Requests from patients from other districts will be processed on a secondary basis.

On behalf of our patients and colleagues, we ask for your understanding and look forward to a good working relationship.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bendschneider & Dr. Sigal Partnerschaftsgesellschaft

OUR SERVUCES

Our orthoptic department caters to children, adolescents, and adults alike.

The main focus is on the early detection and treatment of strabismus, eye movement disorders, and visual impairments. An orthoptist (from the Greek: ortho(s) = straight and opsis = vision) specially trained in prophylactic, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures supports our ophthalmologists in this endeavor.

For children, two issues are at the forefront of orthoptics. The first is strabismus (squint), which is not a cosmetic flaw but, if left untreated, can lead to lifelong visual impairment. For this reason, every child should be examined at a vision training center by the age of two at the latest.

The second issue is dyslexia. It is possible that the child is not learning disabled, but simply has poor vision.

For adults, the primary focus is on ensuring perfect vision in everyday life and at work, especially for comfortable working at a computer.

The following criteria are examined in early diagnosis:

  • Visual acuity
  • Ocular alignment
  • Binocular coordination
  • Refractive power of both eyes
  • Depth perception
  • Ocular motility

This may be followed by treatment for conditions such as:

  • Reduced visual acuity
  • Strabismus
  • Abnormal head posture (head tilt)
  • Headaches and eye pain
  • Anisometropia (different refractive power in both eyes)
  • Reading and spelling difficulties (dyslexia)
  • General, neurological, and thyroid disorders with ocular involvement
  • Nystagmus (involuntary eye movements)

If you or your child are already experiencing symptoms as described above, this should be further examined at an optometrist. Also pay attention to:

  • Double vision (diplopia) or blurred vision
  • Blinking, winking, and squeezing the eyes shut
  • Misreaching and stumbling
  • Concentration difficulties
