Orthoptics / Paediatric Clinic
Dear colleagues, dear parents,
due to a high volume of patients and in order to assign patients to the right clinic more effectively, we are restructuring appointment scheduling for the paediatric clinic.
From 1 August 2024, appointments for statutorily insured children at our orthoptic department and paediatric clinic will only be made on presentation of a written report from the paediatrician on the (abnormal) U-examination with the suspected diagnosis and findings, together with a referral. Based on this report, our doctors decide whether the examination is a preventive examination or whether there is already a clearly pathological finding.
Preventive examinations are billed according to the German Medical Fee Schedule, as there is no ophthalmological preventive examination covered by statutory health insurance (not even for children). Parents must pay for the preventive examination for children themselves; it costs €50 for the basic examination plus a further €30 if dilation of the pupils is necessary.
We offer the paediatric clinic at our Breitenbachplatz 21 and Nürnberger Str. 67 practices and primarily serve Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Berlin-Schöneberg. Enquiries from patients from other districts are processed with lower priority.
On behalf of our patients and colleagues we ask for your understanding and look forward to working well together.
Kind regards,
Dr. Bendschneider & Dr. Sigal Partnership

Our Services
Our orthoptic department is aimed at children and adolescents as well as adults. The main focus is on the early detection and treatment of strabismus, eye movement disorders and visual impairments. A specially trained orthoptist supports our ophthalmologists.
For children, two topics are in the foreground: strabismus (squint), which if untreated leads to lifelong visual impairment – every child should be examined in an orthoptic clinic by the age of two at the latest – and dyslexia: the child may not have a learning difficulty but simply a visual impairment. For adults, the primary concern is perfect vision in everyday life and at work, especially comfortable work at a computer.
The following criteria are examined in early diagnosis:
- visual acuity
- eye alignment
- the cooperation of both eyes
- the refractive power of both eyes
- spatial vision
- eye mobility
This may be followed by treatment of conditions such as:
- visual impairment
- strabismus
- abnormal head posture
- headaches and eye pain
- different refractive power of the two eyes
- reading and spelling difficulties
- general, neurological and thyroid diseases involving the eyes
