Ophthalmological Examination

Our Services

Eye examinations and treatments of the anterior and posterior segments

In addition to standard examinations to determine visual acuity, combined where appropriate with advice on spectacle lenses (including progressive lenses), spectacle prescriptions and contact lens fitting and check-ups, we offer a wide range of special eye examinations and treatments of the anterior and posterior segments using state-of-the-art diagnostics and effective treatment options, as well as further service-oriented offerings around the subject of eyes.

Macular and Retinal Diseases

Fluorescein angiography

Imaging of the blood vessels at the back of the eye using a fluorescent dye (fluorescein) is called fluorescein angiography (FA). It is an important diagnostic tool for various retinal and macular diseases such as diabetes mellitus (diabetic retinopathy, diabetic maculopathy), vascular occlusions, new vessel formation, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal inflammation and tumours. To perform the angiography, the pupil must be dilated with eye drops. Fluorescein is a dye, not a contrast agent. Via the blood circulation the dye reaches the vessels of the eye after about 20 seconds. Digital still images and video recordings are then taken and evaluated.

OCT

OCT stands for optical coherence tomography. Using a harmless laser scanner, high-resolution cross-sectional images of the back of the eye can be taken. With OCT we are able to produce high-resolution images of the retinal layers of the macula in our practice. This non-invasive method has become the gold standard in the diagnosis of macular and retinal diseases such as a hole in the centre of the retina (macular hole), a thin layer of scar tissue on the point of sharpest vision (epiretinal membrane), diabetic changes of the retina (diabetic retinopathy, diabetic maculopathy), vascular occlusions and, of course, age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The thickness of the nerve fibre layer can also be measured, which is helpful in diagnosing glaucoma. The procedure is contact-free, painless and safe.

Fundus Photography

The fundus camera takes precise photographic images of the back of the patient's eye. This is done to document findings – in particular of the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels – in high quality. It serves to monitor the course of diseases, for diagnosis and for documentation of findings.
